    Introduction: - B.M Birla college of nursing is an esteemed institution for nursing education in India offering basic, post basic and specialized nursing education programme through the discovery and dissemination of knowledge through research and other scholarly activities. The college of nursing was established in the year 2003,to provide educational experience for future leaders in nursing that would include a strong ethical component. The nursing programme integrates liberal arts and science with professional education required for nursing practice. It is controlled financially by B.M.Birla Heart Research Centre, Kolkata and academically affiliated to The University of Health Sciences West Bengal. The primary objective of the college is to provide and promote education and research in the field of nursing, as high quality nursing is always knowledge and evidence based.

    Mission : - The mission of the college of nursing is to generate, disseminate and apply knowledge as it relates to nursing care of individuals, families, and communities in health and illness. Advancement and dissemination of knowledge promotes the ultimate objective of improving the quality of life through the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, and the care of the ill and vulnerable. The college seeks excellence through continuing achievement and improvement in the quality of its teaching, research, clinical practice and service.

    We believe in dedication to excellence in the generation and transmission of nursing knowledge through a teaching learning process that is the responsibility of both faculty and pupil.

    We believe in recognizing and responding to the unique learning needs of a diverse student population in an environment that facilitates and encourages critical thinking and a spirit of scientific inquiry.

    We support the truth that human beings are the focus of nursing care and interventions and are therefore entitled to comprehensive treatment with dignity and respect regardless of economic, ethnic, religious or social position or belief.

    We believe in an environment that fosters the development of professional skills necessary for the implementation of therapeutic nursing interventions through the utilization of critical thinking and effective communication.

    Accreditation- The programmes are fully accredited by the Indian Nursing Council (march 2003) .The College is under the affiliation of The University Of Health Sciences, West Bengal with effect from February 2004.

    OBJECTIVES: - On completion of the programme the graduates are expected to:

    •  Function as self directed individuals and responsible citizens.

    •  Be aware of the influence of socio cultural, political, religious and economical factors on health and illness.

    •  Utilize knowledge of behavioral, social. Physical, physiological, medical and nursing sciences in their nursing     practice.

    •  Provide comprehensive and holistic nursing care, using nursing process and problem solving approach to people     of all ages at different settings in health as well as in illness.

    •  Demonstrate skills in communication and interpersonal relationship when working collaboratively with members     of various disciplines.

    •  Demonstrate beginning skills in teaching, management, research and guidance and counseling.

    Duration Of the Course- The course is of four academic years. Session starts in the month of August.

    Number of Seats- Number of seats available for admission to the first year of B.Sc nursing course 40.

    Eligibility-

    Candidate for admission to the course will be required to have;

    •  Completed the age of 17 years and not exceeding 28 years on or before 31 st December of the year of     admission.

    •  Passed two-year pre- university examination with physics, chemistry, and biology, English and vernacular in one     chance with minimum of 50% aggregate marks.

    1. Desirable performance in joint entrance examination conducted by the university.
    2. Female Indian candidates only .
    3. A residential certificate of continious 5 years stay in west Bengal till date of application.

    Attendance -

    Candidates will be allowed to appear in each year of examination only if she has obtained 80% attendance in theory of each subject and 100% in clinical field before awarding degree.

    Vacation -

    Summer vacation: 2 weeks

    Puja Vacation: 4 weeks

    Public Holiday : 1 week

    College Fees -

    Tuition fees-20, 000

    Development fees-10, 000 (Only for 1 st year)

    Laboratory fees-2, 000

    Admission fees-10, 000

    Library fees-5, 000

    Stationary charges-3, 000

    Registration fees- as decided by the university (Once)

    Caution money deposit-2, 000 (refundable)

    Total Annual Fee- 50,000.00 (Except Caution Money)

    Refund of Fees -

    If a student leaves the college at any time during the session, deposited fees will not be refundable except caution money.

    Examination - University examination will be conducted in every year on the subjects covered during that respective year. The examination will be as follows-

    •  Part-1 at the end of 1 st year.

    •  Part 2 at the end of 2 nd year.

    •  Part 3 at the end of 3 rd year.

    •  Part4 at the end of 4 th year.

    Standards Of Passing -

    Candidate should obtain 50% in major subjects individually in theoretical and practical, where as to pass any subsidiary subject, a candidate has to obtain at least 40% of marks.

    A candidate who has secured at least 70% of marks in aggregate in all the parts of examination in the major subjects shall be declared to have been placed in 1 st class provided that she has passed the subjects in 1 st chance and also passed all the subsidiary subjects. Others will be declared to have been placed in 2 nd class.

    Internal Assessment-

    •  There shall be an internal assessment on all the subjects' .as per curriculum.

    •  The marks of the internal assessment will be submitted to the university prior to examination.

    •  A candidate shall be eligible to appear for the university exam only if she obtains not less than 50% marks in    each of the subjects in the internal assessment.

    Award Of Degree -

    After passing in all four parts of the examination, a candidate will be awarded a B.Sc nursing degree under the seal of the university and signed by the Vice chancellor.  

    A student who will secure the first place with first class in all the parts of the exam conducted by the university will receive a certificate / gold medal along with the degree from the university.  

    Publishing Result -

    The university will publish a list of successful candidates with in two months of the examination conducted.

    General rules-

    •  A student shall be permitted to continue in the next year provided she has only two subjects of previous year at    one time to clear.

    •  In case a candidate fails in any of the subjects in any year she will be given only three chances inclusive of the    first attempt.

    •  I n case a candidate fails in the theory examination but passes in the practical exam of a paper she will be     required to appear in theory paper only.

    •  In case a candidate fails in practical examination but passes in the theoretical paper she will be required to     appear in practical examination only.

    •  A candidate who shall fail to pass more than two subjects in any part of the examination in three chances     inclusive of the first chance shall not be allowed to continue the preceding parts of the examination and will be     reverted back to the previous year.

    Library - There is a well-equipped air-conditioned library for the students.

    Uniform - Students will have to bear the expenses of uniform prescribed by the institutional authority.
