- Analysis of the concentration, structure and functions of the cells and their precursors in the bone marrow -
- Analysis of chemical constituents of plasma or serum intimately, linked with blood cell structure and functions.
- Study of functions of the platelets and proteins involved in blood coagulation.
Changes in one or more of the characteristics mentioned above may produce hematological disease or manifestations. The hematology laboratory deals with routine determination of total number of cells in circulation, hemoglobin concentration, and differential count of leukocytes based on the study of the stained blood smear. Study of the stained blood smear helps in detecting morphological abnormalities of various cells seen in the peripheral blood circulation.
Tests Performed by the Hematology Lab :
COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT (CBC) Complete Blood Count tests are–
- Hemoglobin (Hb) concentration
- Total erythrocyte count (RBC)
- Total leukocyte (white blood cell) count (WBC)
- Examination of blood film (smear) for,
- Assessment of red cell morphology /Assessment of platelet number.
- Differential white cell count
- Parasites
Complete hemogram includes, CBC tests and in addition to that,
- Packed cell volume (PCV)
- Mean corpuscular volume (MCV)
- Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
- Platelet count
By using automatic blood cell counters it is possible to determine following additional parameters–
- Red cell distribution (RDW), {As coefficient of variation (CV) or as standard deviation (SD)
- Platelet distribution width (PDW)
- Mean platelet volume (MPV)
- Platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR)
Other routinely performed hematological tests are-
- Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
- Reticulocyte count
- Absolute eosinophil count
- Prothrombin time
- Activated partial thromboplastin time
- FIBRINOGEN
- FIBRIN DEGRADATION PRODUCTS
- BONE MARROW EXAMINATION
Quality control :
- Internal quality control performed daily.
- External quality control - excellent performance in PT programmes of CAP,AIIMS,CMC Vellore.
Hematology:
Hematology encompasses the study of blood components and coagulation. It includes,
