Cardiac Diet:
Purpose: The purpose of the diet is to lower blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and weight if needed. When a patient without heart disease is first diagnosed wwith elevated blood cholesterol, doctors often prescribe a program of diet, exercise, and weight loss to bring levels down.
General Description: Fat is an essential nutrient source for the body. However, it is not the body's only source of evergy, and too much fat in the diet can be harmful. It is especially bad for the circulatory system because it raises blood cholesterol levels that can contribute to hear attack or stroke. This diet is designed to reduce fat and cholesterol in the blood. The diet also restricts foods containing high amounts of sodium. Sodium should be limited to 2,000-3,000 mg per day. A teaspoon of table salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Factors that Affect Blood Cholesterol Levels:
- Heredity - high cholesterol
